Freedom Hall is a multi-purpose venue built by the Commonwealth on the Kentucky State Fairgrounds. It’s a shed, in jamband-speak, like many others around the country. Freedom Hall opened in 1956, and hosted most notably the Kentucky Colonels ABA team, as well as the University of Louisville men’s basketball team – at least until 2010, when the Cardinals and their cheater coach Rick Pitino moved to the even more awesomely named KFC Yum! Center in 2010. Besides the Dead, the Doors, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, and Creed played there.

In 1974, the Dead were touring behind [or in front of – JF] a sound system so massive it was dubbed the Wall of Sound. The Wall reached from floor to ceiling, dwarfing the band, but filling the hall with crystal clear good vibes, according to the legend and the mystique that has grown around what is now considered a classic show from one of the band’s greatest periods: 1974, or, more specifically, JUNE 1974 – a month of quite interesting experimentation for the band.

This is the second show of an eight-show summer tour that began in Des Moines, Iowa on June 16th and ended in Springfield, Massachusetts on June 30. 6/18/74 is so highly regarded, in fact, that the band released it as part of the so-called Road Trips series [RT#2.3], along with part of the Des Moines show. There’s something special here, and some people consider this to be the best show of the year! (Consider that 1974 had 2/24, 3/23, 5/19, 6/23, 6/26, 6/28, 7/19 and 10/19) And they didn’t even resort to set pieces like Playing In The Band or Dark Star, which was pretty rare. Every song is done extremely well. It’s a showcase for most of the material from Wake of the Flood and From the Mars Hotel – Eyes, Row Jimmy, WRS > Let It Grow, and Loose Lucy. And those Garcia ballads! China Doll, Stella Blue, and Morning Dew? How often does that happen?

BT Wind – passionately sung by Weir
BIODTL – My Old Kentucky Home quote and killer piano solo from Keith. Keith is very prominent in the mix and also sounds great on Ramble On Rose, Mexicali, and Eyes.
Eyes – an astounding, top-shelf version that is up there with the best of them – 8/6/74, 8/13/75, 10/19/74. Tight and fluid with great jamming, Keith does some cool stuff during the “Stronger Than Dirt” section.
China Doll – great harmonies
Around And Around – into the bonus zone after the previous Eyes > China Doll combo. Pure rock & roll with a ferocious ending (check out Phil).
Then comes second set, which makes this show legendary. The WRS > Let It Grow > The Other One > It’s A Sin Jam > Stella Blue segment is one of the best ever. But let’s not jump ahead of ourselves just yet.

Loose Lucy –  funkified, bouncy version, an early sign that the band is getting their blues chops on.
El Paso – Wow! Speedy and aggressive! This will leave you breathless. I love Billy’s crisp, snappy drumming and Keith’s twinkling piano.
Row Jimmy – Whoa that slide-guitar is sublime (also used in WRS). “The slide solo is pristine in its attack leaving you with the sensation of having just been attenuated and it leads back into a sharply sung vocal part and presents itself as a perfect platform for the delicious Weather Report Suite that follows upon Jimmy’s heels.” (LMA reviewer Evan S Hunt) Quintessential version.
WRS > Let It Grow – album perfect, possibly the best ever. Contains a rare jam into The Other One that is a mind-bending, face-stealing, finely-crafted musical journey. Phil carpet-bombs Freedom Hall in the jam session.
The Other One – wow, what a journey!
At about 5:45 into the The Other One, the beat drops out, and they start the space jam with Jerry, quietly at first, then louder, starting some meltdown riffage, but someone else (Weir? Lesh?) is producing some freaky noises that I haven’t heard in any other show, but that fit in perfectly here. After several minutes of space, they slip easily into a funk jam which in turn gives way to the It’s a Sin theme and then to a gorgeous Stella.  (LMA reviewer gphishmom)
It’s A Sin Jam – super rare instrumental jam.
Stella – beautiful version, and the segue from It’s A Sin is perfect. Transcendence.
Big River & Tennessee Jed – played late in the second set in a very unusual placement for any year. The boys must have known they were playing well and didn’t want to end. Both these are given the full second-set treatment. Big River is vicious. The tempo in Tennessee Jed is bouncy and engaging and has great singing by Garcia and Lesh. They are definitely having fun.
Morning Dew – The only way to close one of the greatest shows ever. Very rare encore signaling just how special this was. This version is laden with Phil-bombs. Great Jerry/Keith interplay. And Garcia’s vocals are filled with passion.
“Throughout, the song Garcia seems largely propelled by just a note or two from bass, piano and drums, creating a canyon-like spaciousness. The quiet period after the “doesn’t matter verses” is very extended, and is played with great tenderness. Garcia goes into his buzzsaw at 12:05, and the crescendo builds band-round for probably forty solid seconds.” 
Summary – the Eyes, WRS>Let It Grow, Other One, It’s A Sin Jam, Stella Blue, Big River, Morning Dew…all top shelf. The Dead at their finest.

“Game of Thrones” may be over, but the legend of Brooks Koepka grows. On Sunday, Brooks Koepka hoisted the Wanamaker Trophy and waded even further into fantastical lore. Perhaps USA Today said it best, “For a man almost childishly alert to perceived slights off the course, he moves through the choppy waters of a major like a shark focused on real meals and uninterested in the chum bobbing along the way.” Koepka overcame four consecutive bogeys on his inward nine Sunday – he led by seven strokes as the final round got underway – to beat Dustin Johnson by two shots with a final-round 74. The defending PGA champion, Koepka won for the fourth time in the last eight major championships he has played. He is guaranteed the top spot in the world golf rankings. Sunday’s victory netted him a cool $1.98 million. More importantly, it may have finally cemented ultimate respect and big paydays with potential sponsors. Koepka’s current biggest deals are with Nike and Michelob Ultra, and he doesn’t have an equipment sponsor. Dollar signs behind an equipment deal just went up big time.
It’s graduation season, and we’d like to suggest a gift. Our Sport Business Handbook recognizes the last 50 years as the formative era of the modern sport business industry. As colleges and universities graduate their 2019 classes of aspiring career professionals, this is a rare opportunity to hear from some of the industry’s most influential players. Consider that according to Forbes and PriceWaterhouseCoopers, the U.S. Sports Industry will be an $80 billion annual category by 2022. Job growth across all sports-related industries is expanding at over 12 percent annually — more than double the national job market. In markets like Atlanta, Boston, Denver, Miami, Dallas, Jacksonville, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh, sports-related job growth is increasing at or above 20% annually. The global sports industry is estimated to be a $1.3 trillion category. Sports media is the fastest-growing segment of the industry. As a subset of that, legalized sports gambling represents a multi-billion-dollar category poised to grow exponentially, as evidenced by casino and mobile sports betting legalized in Iowa last Monday. So if you have a child poised to join the workforce post college, they could do a lot worse than a career in sports.
The NCAA is opening the door for college athletes to be compensated for their names, images and likenesses. The Washington Post reported that the NCAA is examining how its rules can be modified to allow the change. Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman and Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith will head a new working group on the topic. “This group will bring together diverse opinions from the membership — from presidents and commissioners to student-athletes — that will examine the NCAA’s position on name, image and likeness benefits and potentially propose rule modifications tethered to education,” Ackerman said in a statement. In most scenarios, NCAA rules forbid its athletes from receiving benefits or compensation for their names, images and likenesses from either a school or a third party, including commercial contracts. While the working group will not consider any concepts that “could be construed as payment for participation in college sports,” the NCAA says that its mission is to “provide [an] opportunity for students to compete against other students [that] prohibits any contemplation of pay-for-play.” A final report is due to the NCAA’s board of governors in October.
The Indianapolis 500 will likely be the first time a CBD sponsorship will be featured during an official IndyCar race. The development comes after Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsports (ASPM) last Thursday announced a partnership with CBD-based sports drink Defy, according to the Indianapolis Star. The product’s name will appear on both James Hinchliffe’s No. 5 and Marcus Ericsson’s No. 7 entry. CBD has been legal in Indiana since March 2018, and the growing CBD industry has the "potential to become a new revenue source for teams." That comes amid plenty of examples of "drivers struggling to find sponsors," including Kyle Kaiser's No. 32 car from Juncos Racing. ASPM Team President Jon Flack said that fellow team sponsors, IndyCar and NBC were "all open to and approved the idea of allowing sponsorships that advertise products containing CBD." Interestingly, while THC level in Defy is allegedly well below the 0.3% allowed, IndyCar drivers can’t drink it because CBD is on the organization’s banned substance list. As the CBD market grows across the country, it is fair to wonder what sponsorship effect it will have on IndyCar.
Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds signed legislation "allowing gambling on college and professional sports in Iowa," according to the Des Moines Register. The new legislation  "allows Iowans 21 years and older to wager on sporting events at any of Iowa's 19 casinos and online if they visit a casino once in person to prove they are at least 21." It also "legalizes bets on fantasy sports through websites and apps like DraftKings and FanDuel." The law "does not allow in-game proposition bets on college sports." While the legislation "takes effect immediately, some of the rules still need to be ironed out." The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission, which will regulate sports betting in Iowa, previously said that it would "start to develop rules for casinos to implement after Reynolds signed the legislation." Those rules "would likely be implemented in July or August," before college sports and NFL games start. Iowa is only the latest state to allow legal sports wagering, and with every state that signs on, the stakes – and the potential revenues – rise considerably.

The Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, home to the Oakland A’s and Raiders, is set to become the Ring Central Coliseum. Belmont-based communications firm Ring Central has sealed a three-year, $3 million naming rights deal for the 56,000-seater stadium, including an option for a fourth year. Ring Central will assume a role last held by Overstock.com, which pulled out of its $1.45 million-a-year deal with the Coliseum after the Raiders announced plans in 2016 to relocate to Las Vegas. Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum will soon become RingCentral Coliseum, as the California-based business communications provider is buying the naming rights and will pay $1 million a year for the "next three years, with an option for a fourth year." As the stadium authority approved the deal, the "name change would go into effect immediately." Even though the Oakland pro sports universe is undergoing seismic change, as the Raiders prepare for their Vegas move and the Warriors head to San Francisco, its signature sports facility remains an attractive target for brands.

About 72% of sneakers imported to the U.S. are from China. The publication quoted CNBC’s Sara Eisen, who said of how the ongoing trade dispute is affecting the shoe industry, “These companies have been diversifying but there’s no denying that a lot of sneakers are still made in China.” So-called “sneaker wars” have long played a seminal role in basketball, soccer, and increasingly, in lifestyle brands popular in the U.S. and elsewhere. This may seem inconsequential compared to the toll expected in other industries like agriculture and electronics. ESPN partners with Caesars for sports betting shows. According to Bloomberg, Caesars Entertainment Corp will have its odds data and branding integrated with ESPN programs. ESPN will put a studio inside Caesars’ Linq Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas and build a new series of shows and videos aimed at the sports gambling market. The gaming corporation plans to contribute to programming on the ESPN network, ESPN’s website, and on the ESPN app. The sports betting content on ESPN’s betting-related content includes a few podcasts, segments on shows like “SportsCenter” and “Outside the Lines,” and a full sports gambling show called “Daily Wager,” which launched in March. In 1947, Andy and his brothers teamed up with comedienne Kay Thompson (who also wrote the popular children’s book series Eloise”) for successful, trend setting nightclub act. Thompson and the brothers spent the next few years performing all over the United States and in Europe. But it all came to an end in 1951 as the group disbanded and each and every brother went their own way. Andy chose to move to New York and continue to persue his vocal career.
While in New York, Andy got his first television gig as a regular performer on Steve Allen’s “Tonight Show.” For 2 1/2 years he appeared on Allen’s show which led to his first recording contract with Cadence Records.
Andy’s first album, Andy Williams Sings Steve Allen, was released in 1956. It wasn’t long before Andy had his first Top 10 hit with “Canadian Sunset.” What followed was a string of hits that included “Butterfly,” “Lonely Street,” and ” The Hawaiian Wedding Song,” for which he received the first of his five Grammy Award nominations.
His work in television continued during this time period with regular appearances on “The Dinah Shore Chevy Show” and, in 1958, for 13 weeks he presented “The Chevy Showroom with Andy Williams.” In the summer of 1959 Andy was chosen by CBS to host a variety program that was to replace”The Gary Moorre Show” for a 13-week period. When this series of shows concluded, Andy began to concentrate on one-hour television specials. The first, “Music from Shubert Alley,” was presented by NBC on November 13, 1959.
But New York City and television were not the only places you could see Andy during the late 1950s. He also returned to the nightclub circuit performing for live audiences as he did years before with Kay Thompson and his brothers. All of this exposure and hard work would shortly payoff in a very big way.
The first event that kicked Andy’s career into high gear was the change of recording labels. In 1962, he began his 28-year association with Columbia, Records. Almost immediately he scored his first top 10 hit for Columbia, “Can’t Get Used to Losing You.” Many a lot more hits were to follow, but none would become more associated with Andy Williams than ” Moon River,” the Oscar winning song from the film Breakfast at Tiffany’s. This song, which Andy had already recorded for an album, briefly became his theme song after his stunning performance of it at the Academy Awards.
Although never released as a single, the song propelled his album, Moon River and Other Great Themes, to Wine and Roses, which became his all-time biggest chart hit spending an incredible 16 weeks at #1 and staying on the chart for over 100 weeks. His subsequent recordings were best sellers and resulted in Andy receiving 18 gold and 3 platinum certified albums.
The second event that helped make Andy a superstar was the debut of his weekly television series, ” The Andy Williams Show.” Debuting on September 16, 1963, Andy premiered his refreshing variety show on NBC that would eventually last for nine years and would win three Emmy Awards for Best Musical/Variety Series ( 1966, 1967, and 1969). It was one of NBC’s top ranked programs. From this series Andy began his classic Christmas specials that featured the full Williams family.
Live performances were still a big part of Andy’s career and in 1966, he opened Caesar’s Palace and subsequently headlined at the famed Las Vegas hotel for the next 20 years. By the time “The Andy Williams Show” ended in 1972, Andy had become a true international superstar. With tremendous worldwide record sales and global distribution of his television shows, he was just as popular in other countries as he was right here in the US. This recognition prompted several tours of England, Europe, Australia, Japan, and Asia, breaking attendance records wherever he appeared. At this point in his career, most performers would have opted to sit back, relax and just make minimal concert and television appearances. However, Andy chose another path; one that has put him in the international spotlight once again.
In 1991, Andy took a trip to Branson, Missouri, to see his friend Ray Stevens, who had just opened a theater in the growing country music town and amazing talent the town featured, that he began to make his own plans for becoming a part of the small Ozark community.
His plans to build a $12 million state-of-the-art theater came to fruition as the Andy Williams Moon River Theater opened its doors on May 1, 1992. Andy had become the first non-country performers and theme shows began to move into tiny town that would soon be known as the live music capital of the world.
At his Moon River Theater, Andy performs six days a week from September through December. His electrifying performances blend, music, comedy, and dance into a spectacular production show that has become Branson’s most popular show. In November and December, the Andy Williams Christmas Show packs the 2000 seat theater with a show that recalls his classic television Christmas specials.
The Moon River Theater’s design reflects the beauty and environmental integrity of the surrounding Ozark Mountains. The 48,000 square foot structure is set among 16 acres landscaped with foliage, rock formations, waterfalls and a rippling stream. It won the 1992 Convention Award for created land use from the State of Missouri, and is the only theater ever to be featured in Architectural Digest.
For the interior, it was Andy’s idea to create a beautiful auditorium for live performances along with a lobby area that he could display pieces of art from his personal collection. Displayed in the lobby and auditorium are sculptures and paintings by renowned artists like Willem de Kooning, Henry Moore, Kenneth Noland, Donald Roller Wilson, Jack Bush, Jacque Lipchitz, and Robert Motherwell.
Andy and his wife, Debbie, now reside in Branson just a few miles from the theater. Their beautiful Country French home that they built is located on a golf course in a private location community. The house overlooks the gorgeous Lake Taneycomo, which is famous for its cool waters and trout fishing.
In the spring of 1999, Andy identified himself back on the record charts once again. In England, a commercial for the Fiat automobile company featured Andy’s version of “Music to Watch Girls By,” which was a minor hit for him in 1967. The ad became so popular that the record company re-released the song as a single and this time around it was a top 10 hit. Because of the renewed interest in his music, Andy made his first trip to England in a decade and appeared on several television shows and radio programs. The response from crowds of all ages have been incredible.

To kick off the summer, we ventured out of the golden state and took a USA road trip across the country. With two paddle boards, an electric skateboard, several pairs of hiking boots, a giant bag of coffee, yoga mats, a medley of fruit snacks and energy bars and a fully rigged out camper-friendly Mazda 3, we set out on our trip. The initial itinerary was a bit intimidating. For the first time, we had planned to drive through nine states in eight days, with the final destination of New Hampshire on the horizon. Given that Austin and I hadn’t seen so many parts of this beautiful country that we call our home, we were so unbelievably excited. There is always the element of uncertainty that arises when going on a grand adventure, but we were prepared.
Our friends were waiting for us in New Hampshire, so we had to keep a tight schedule. We had many paddling adventures planned upon arrival. Austin and I left Los Angeles at 6:00am, and the adventure had begun. We pressed play on Harry Potter & The Sorcerer’s Stone on audiobook, and we were off!

Our first day of driving was easy. We made it to St. George in the afternoon with plenty of time to hike and explore the area. See photos below for our adventure in the campground. At this point, we had finished our first audiobook and were wrapped up in all the fun of our adventure.

Arches National Park was something out of a dream. I felt like I was on another planet walking up the steep cliffs and Mars-like atmosphere. Driving through Colorado was pure magic. Nestled in this massive state is the most gorgeous collection of mountains, rivers and untouched terrain that is only a stone’s throw off the highway. Certainly a stark contrast to the rocky arches of Utah.

We were blessed with the most beautiful sunset when arriving in Ogallala (try saying that city five times fast). The campground was secluded and serene, with only a few families rolled up on the beach enjoying the summer day.

Days four and five were dedicated to driving, and we had planned to stay at hotels. Sometimes its necessary to take a break at a Holiday Inn and enjoy the wifi, breakfast buffets and showers (most importantly) that they have to offer. We traversed through many, many miles of farmland in Nebraska and Iowa until we reached the meeting place of three cities along the Mississippi. In this cute little town, Davenport is lively and fun with a lot of personality. We checked out some of the local breweries along the water and had a lovely night to wind down after several days of camping. The Great River Brewing Co and Front Street Brewery were two of our favorites.
These two days were filled with quite a bit of rain as well, which quite honestly made it hard to get good photos. We had cleared past the halfway point on the trip and knew that the next stop was to see some of our closest friends up in Buffalo, NY.
Day 6 & 7:

On the road again! We got to Sunset Bay and couldn’t believe that this perfect paradise exists in upstate NY. Kevin & Christian are our paddling friends who run SUP Erie Adventures, a multi-sport service and recreational guide serving all of Buffalo and Western New York. Our first night in Buffalo was one of my personal favorite nights of summer so far. We had some drinks at the cutest restaurant on the beach, made vegan curry for dinner, and had a bonfire until the stars came out.
The next morning, we slept in and then went for a paddle along the shores of Lake Erie. Paddling here is such a special experience — we were followed by eagles around the cliffs on such a beautiful and sunny day. We then took a hike to Zoar Valley which was another other-worldly experience. I felt like I was in another country. The pure beauty that exists here was unbelievable. After hiking and a quick paddle at Sunset bay, Austin and I skateboarded around the neighborhood before dinner, and then went to sleep early to prepare for our last day on the road.
Day 8:
NY – MA – NH
Buffalo – Portsmouth

This was our longest day of driving, although it was somehow the easiest. By now, we had our routine down with the occasional stops at Subway, gas refills and stretch breaks, and driving trade offs between the two of us. Immediately after arriving in New Hampshire, we grabbed some food and then went for a beautiful evening paddle. Our trip had come to an end, but the adventure was only just beginning. Austin and I are now paddling every day and working at a surf shop on the beach. Currently working on the next trip, so stay tuned!
